Kids Enjoying Shoreline Lake - The Village Residences Apartments

Summertime is officially here and it’s in full swing whether you live in apartments in Palo Alto CA or somewhere else in the surrounding area. As a member of this great community, it’s up to you to find fun, exciting, and adventurous ways to spend your days in the sunshine. For some of us, it’s easy to come up with plenty of wonderful things to do. For others, they have a hard time discovering the best places to visit to make the most of the summer.

If you’re in either camp, you’ll definitely love discovering the beauty and amazing experiences that you can have at Shoreline Lake whether you’re into sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, racing, or a number of other fun and exciting ways to fill your days at the lake.

More important than anything else, Shoreline Lake presents the perfect opportunity to step outside, soak up the sun, have fun, and take a break from the office, computer screen, tablet, or TV to get fresh air and get back with nature. Because we all spend too much time indoors these days, so hanging out at the lake is not only good for your health, it will help cleanse your mind, body, and soul.

With that said, we’ll now take a look at the history of Shoreline Lake, some of the more popular upcoming events, and other things that you can do whether visiting for the first time or the 10,000th time.

A Brief History of Shoreline Lake

The history of Shoreline Lake begins all the way back in 1968, when Mountain View, CA decided that it was time to create a regional park in the area. They wanted to not only develop a safe space for members of the community, they wanted to make sure that it was environmentally friendly, recreationally sound, and a great place for their citizens to go to enjoy time in nature after they get out of their office in Silicon Valley, even if it’s only for a little while.

This was a challenge whether you know it or not, because Mountain View planned to use very specific land to make this regional park a reality. In fact, the land that they were going to use was the home of a sewer treatment plant, low-lying floodplains, two city dumps, a junk yard, and it was also the home of a hog farm! As you can imagine, this was a huge undertaking to say the least, and it took them more than 15 years to finally come up with a plan for Shoreline Regional Park which they developed in 1983.

In order to mitigate flooding they had to raise the land by 15 feet. And in order to fill the lake, it took them 13 years where they successfully imported 2400 tons of water per day, which is an amazing feat in itself and one that is practically unheard of.

As you should have figured out by now, Shoreline Lake is man-made. It’s 50 acres in diameter and it’s filled with saltwater that gets pumped in from San Francisco Bay and circulates out to Permanente Creek.

Besides Shoreline Lake, there’s also a park and the foremost concert venue in Silicon Valley, which is known as Shoreline Amphitheater. We’ll cut our history lesson short right here and continue to tell you why visiting this beautiful place is such a fantastic idea for you, your family, and your friends.

Experience Boating like You’ve Never Done so Before

The great thing about visiting this lake is you have an opportunity to go boating right in the heart of Silicon Valley in Mountain View, CA. This may not have seemed possible in the past until this lake was created, but now it’s a regular event that many people really seem to enjoy.

While out on the lake, you can experience all types of boating and do whatever it is that your heart desires. You can go sailing, stand up paddling, kayaking, windsurfing, and so much more. And if you’ve never learned how to go boating in any way, it’s certainly possible for you to take private lessons while here to learn how to windsurf, kayak, sail, or paddleboat.

Even better, if you really get into water sports you can become an active member of the Shoreline racing scene. There are races and regattas taking place on a regular basis, which means you have a chance to develop a pleasurable, worthwhile hobby that you may not have ever considered before.

They currently have competitive windsurfing and sailing. So if you’re interested in either of those types of races, you may want to join the team and become an expert competitor. There are novices and veterans alike and plenty of great people to connect with to experience your hobby with other like-minded individuals just like you.
